June is Black Music Month - a time to celebrate those pioneers in music who have fought and sacrificed for their stories to be told and heard through music. This month, join us in commemorating the music that influences creativity, diversity, unity and continues to bring together people from all walks of life through the love of music.
During the month of June, we are connecting residents to some of the hottest music hitting the DC scene! As part of Black Music Month, the #EntertainDC Office in collaboration with WUSA9 will highlight two of DC's own, Chaz French, June 7th, and Adé, June 28th on DMV Sound Check! Also, starting June 8th, tune in to watch Konshens the MC host/perform on "Skillz," a presentation of unique and eclectic performances from DC's talented upcoming hip-hop artists. "Skillz" airs every Friday and Saturday at 9 PM on DKN (District Knowledge Network).
Last year, the DC Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment and the District government made history -- winning the District Government's first ever Emmy Award for The 202's "Bell Biv DeVoe" episode. Without further ado, I'd like to announce that we've been nominated for our second consecutive Emmy Award! I'd like to thank The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter for their recognition in honoring excellence in television programming. This year, we've been nominated in the "Historical/Cultural - Program/Special” category for "DCN Presents: Black History Month Through Song." The Emmy Award winners will be announced at the 61st Emmy Awards Gala on Saturday, June 22nd at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center.
What makes this month even more special? How about the launch of Reel-Music: the District's free, all-inclusive, and fully searchable online music directory that connects you with other music professionals, venues, and performance opportunities in the District! Listings are free to create and online registration typically takes 10 minutes to complete. To register, visit entertainment.dc.gov on your desktop device and navigate to the "Music" tab.
To all of the 700,000+ District residents in all 8 Wards and to my #EntertainDC Family, without you, none of this would be possible! I am privileged to not only work alongside our Mayor, Muriel Bowser, but also with a team who creatively exceeds my expectations every single day. I will continuously say thank you to Mayor Muriel Bowser, to DC, and to my #EntertainDC Family.

In 1979 Kenny Gamble, Ed Wright and Dyana Williams implemented a month-long celebration of black music. These music business insiders pioneered Black Music Month and helped to create a continuous movement of empowerment and appreciation. On June 7th, 1979, the inspirational group successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter to host a reception, formally recognizing the cultural and financial contributions of black music throughout history. Since that fateful year, Black Music Month has grown from an intimate commemoration to a national reach with an abundance of events held annually across the country.
